– As if in an enchanted castle, three mystics look at images that make them fly. The texts that speak of them overflow with visions where divine children leap out of heavenly cradles; graceful maidens on horseback ride through ‘transforming’ forests; speaking Madonnas may bow before the women or they may quarrel with them; talkative Christs may come alive, so as to ‘seduce’ the mystics, or they may unsettle them like knights in fairy tales. This book analyses the stories of three mystical women - two hagiographers and one autobiographer - made of words, yes, but also of images. Initially, the focus is on the hagio-biography of Saint Lutgarda (1182-1246), belonging to the collection of lives written by the Dominican Thomas of Cantimpré - the Vitae matrum; Lutgarda shows that she had visions of celestial characters based on how they were represented by the iconography of her time. Another mystical experience analysed is that of Saint Angela of Foligno (1248-1309), a carnal and passionate woman who seeks the Absolute with the help of painted images, as we read in her spiritual autobiography. The circle closes with the mystic Saint Agnes of Montepulciano (1268-1317), herself very sensitive to the “power of images”. M. Zangari, Santità femminile e disturbi mentali fra Medioevo ed età moderna, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2022 – The analysis of the complex relationship between female sainthood, hysteria and other mental disorders between the Middle Ages and the modern age: this is the important and fascinating subject of this book. It investigates whether ecstatic women, visionaries and, more generally, mystics - whether saints, blessed or venerable - far from being in the grip of ecstasies and visions, were actually affected by personality and behavioural disorders. Through a rigorous analysis of sources, the author takes a close look at the behaviour of female mystics through the lens of the modern medical code and comes to the conclusion that their conduct can often be traced back to more or less documentable pathological standards and profiles. A complex and articulate work of “intersection” of hagiographic-biographical sources (monastic chronicles, diaries, unpublished reports, nosographical accounts of physicians coeval with the mystics surveyed) and iconographic sources (statuettes and devotional objects), little-known but reliable and very convincing documents.https://www.laterza.it/storia/

– The volume examines the mystical women of 17^th-century Florence (Leonora Ramirez de Montalvo, Maria Triboli, Diomira Allegri, Maria Angiola Gini, Anna Caterina Guasconi) and delves into the typical formulas of hagiographic ‘praxis’ that, between the 17^th and 18^th century, resorted to both the topoi of late antique and medieval sanctity and the new forms of Counter-Reformation representation. –The aim of this book is to investigate the delicate relationship between female sanctity and madness, in a time-frame extending from medieval until contemporary times. Constellated by visions, ecstatic raptures, morbid rituals, stigmata and obsessions, the complex phenomenology of female mysticism appears in fact to be articulated and polymorphous, traversed by ‘representations’ that it seems possible to link to the wide spectrum of mental disorders, as well to the hagiographic stereotypes and anthropological implications. I miei interessi di ricerca sono rivolti alla santità femminile , dal Medioevo all'età moderna . Ho una formazione storica e filologica e , avendo studiato con Lina Bolzoni, esperta del rapporto parola -immagine , attribuisco alle fonti testuali lo stesso valore documentario di quelle iconografiche . Per questo la mia metodologia è interdisciplinare. Oltre a studiare le biografie delle sante , da molti anni studio il rapporto tra santità femminile e disagio psichico , e ho condotto ricerche all'avanguardia ( sono stata la prima Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow a condurre una ricerca in Vaticano). I risultati di queste ricerche sono raccolti in un libro, pubblicato da uno dei più importanti e noti editori italiani (Laterza).
