Many Jewish students were afraid of violent attacks on campus or no longer saw any point in pursuing an academic education in Germany. However, some continued to study and completed their degree despite the most unfavourable circumstances. Many students emigrated early to the USA, Palestine or Italy. Abroad, they struggled with financial difficulties and had to reorient themselves professionally. Others remained in Germany, survived or were deported and murdered. Only the survivors were able to tell their stories; video interviews make their biographies tangible. In contrast, there are only a few traces of the students who were murdered in the Shoah.
