Semester of leave

As a student, you have the opportunity to apply for a semester off for important reasons. Please note the following information on how to submit an application.

General information on the holiday semester

  • A leave of absence is only possible for a complete semester and cannot be granted retroactively. As a rule, it can only be granted for a maximum of two consecutive semesters, but a new application is possible.
  • In degree programmes with restricted admission, a leave of absence is not normally permitted in the first and second semesters, except for reasons such as disability, illness, maternity leave, parental leave or caring for relatives in need of care.
  • In the case of multiple enrolment, the leave of absence must be standardised at all universities.
  • A leave of absence does not extend any deadlines for study or examination regulations, excludes the use of the semester ticket and should be discussed with the student counselling service.
  • If necessary, please clarify with other institutions/authorities (e.g. health insurance) whether there is anything else you need to consider.

For the duration of your semester of leave:

  • you are not authorised to attend courses,*
  • the right to complete internships prescribed by the subject-specific study and examination regulations is suspended,
  • the university semesters are counted,
  • the counting of semesters is suspended,
  • BAf?G is generally not paid. Please inform yourself about the regulations in advance of your application at the responsible BAf?G office.

* If there is a reason for leave of absence according to § 62 paragraph 2 number 4 Leave of Absence of the ZSP-HU (maternity protection and parental leave), courses of up to 6 semester hours per week can be attended.

Students who have a residence permit for study purposes (§ 16 AufenthG) must inform the Immigration Office of any authorised semesters of leave. Several semesters of leave of absence may not serve the "purpose of residence" (studying) and may lead to problems with the extension of your residence permit. It is therefore essential that you contact the Immigration Office before applying for a semester of leave.
