Research funding - Third-party funding navigator

The Research Funding department supports researchers in realising their ideas and finding the best research funding. Our third-party funding navigator provides initial guidance along the phases of a project for further information and contacts at the service centre.

Idea phase

Do you have an idea for a project but don't yet know where you can apply for funding? We'll introduce you to some research options.

You can use the following links to search for suitable funding organisations for your project application

Apply for a project

The SZF supports you in all aspects of the application process, which can vary depending on the funding body or funding programme. The following links will provide you with an overview of the framework conditions for various funding organisations as well as the financial, legal and content-related requirements.

The requirements for project costing, especially for personnel costs, differ between donors. Please discuss the specific requirements with the responsible officer at the SZF. You can find more detailed information on the various funding bodies on the intranet.

In many projects, contracts have to be concluded, whether as funding agreements between the funding body and the university or as cooperation agreements between the project participants. The legal advisors (lawyers) at the SZF will be happy to advise you. Please also note the funding body-specific requirements and coordinate with the research advisors.

The possible transfer of research results should already be considered and planned during the application phase. The Innovation and Transfer team will be happy to advise you on this and supervise your applications in transfer-relevant funding lines.

The HU Computer and Media Service (CMS) and the University Library will support you with your research data management. Here you will also find support for the creation of your data management plan. To the HU Research Data Management website.

You can already consider using the edoc server for future data publication. The edoc server is the HU's open access publication server.

Good academic practice (GWP) is the core of scientific integrity and credibility. Here you can find the Statutes on good academic practice at HU as well as information on research ethics. You can find out who you can contact for an ethical review of your research project on the page on research ethics.

In research, for example in biology, geology, agriculture or medicine, if plant or animal materials are used or traditional knowledge is researched, the requirements of the Nagoya Protocol may have to be observed. The SZF provides comprehensive information and checklists.

Export controls must be observed in international research projects outside Europe:

A number of research funders and politicians are calling for or want research results to be communicated more effectively to the public. This means that communication with target groups outside the scientific community is becoming increasingly important. Sources of information:

Set up projects

In order to carry out projects at HU Berlin, the projects must be displayed in the research information system and the first project steps must be initiated before the official start of the project. Here you will find basic information on the HU Berlin research information system and on preparations for the start of a project.

Projects receive a project number for implementation. The projects must be displayed in the Research Information System (FIS) so that this can be generated and the project can be set up by the SZF. To do this, the projects must be entered in the FIS.

Like all other personnel matters, recruitment for externally funded projects is initiated via the faculty administrations, and approval is given by the responsible administrator in the SZF's external funding administration department.

Carry out project

The following links will direct you to the relevant offices for various concerns in the course of the project. In principle, you can always contact the responsible administrator in the External Funding Administration department of the SZF with any concerns you may have in the current project.

As a rule, third-party funded projects are managed by the third-party funding administration in the Research Service Centre. You can find the relevant responsibilities here.

All procurements in externally funded projects must be agreed with the responsible administrator. Please also observe the utilisation guidelines of the funding bodies. Further information on purchasing and procurement can be found in the procurement guidelines.

Even in the current project, all personnel procedures should be agreed in advance with the third-party funding administration and initiated as usual via the faculty administrations.

Useful information on business trips can be found on the intranet pages of the Travel Centre.

All financial utilisation reports are prepared by the responsible administrative department at SZF. Please observe the requirements of the funding organisation when preparing the factual or technical report.

Entries in the Research Information Portal (FIS) make your research project visible. You can enter your publications and use them for your own internet presence and also create dynamic web presentations. Here you will find information and FAQs on the FIS.

The HU provides support for Open Access publication. The University Library provides detailed information on this.

It is recommended to ensure the possibility of unambiguous identification of authors. Registration and use of an ORDID iD is recommended for this purpose. To the information of the University Library.

Finalise project

The research project is nearing the end or has been completed. What steps are required?

Please use the services of the HU Computer and Media Service (CMS) and the University Library (UB). To the HU data management website

The edoc-server is also available for the open access publication of research data and publications.
