Appeal procedure

We endeavour to continue to attract outstanding academics to Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin through quality-guided, transparent and swift procedures. You can find out exactly how an appointment procedure at Humboldt-Universit?t works on this page.

From the invitation to tender to the call request

Once the appointment has been approved by the Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin committees, the professorship is usually advertised internationally and published in the HUB's job advertisements.

We are delighted that one of our published job adverts has aroused your interest and that you are interested in a career at Humboldt-Universit?t. Please send your complete and informative application documents within the application deadline to the institution stated in the advert. You will receive a confirmation of receipt as soon as possible.

The appointment committee, which is appointed by the Faculty Council or the Council of the Central Institute, prepares the decision for the appointment of a professorship as part of an appointment procedure.

Based on formal recruitment requirements and professional criteria, some applicants will be invited to a trial interview. You will usually receive an invitation to the hearing 3 weeks before the planned date. An additional teaching rehearsal (optional, scheduled by the appointment committee if required) enables all applicants to be tested on the same topic and can thus ensure better comparability.

The hearing is a central element of your application and serves as an essential basis for the appointment committee's decision when drawing up the appointment list. It basically contains the following elements:

  • Presentation on a scientific topic in your field of specialisation
  • Opportunity for public discussion (within the university)
  • Optional: Teaching test (students usually take part here)
  • Interview with the members of the appointment committee

The chairperson of the appointment committee or the responsible institution will inform you about the exact procedure for each individual case.

Following the trial lectures, the appointment committee draws up a list without ranking the applicants. External expert opinions are obtained for shortlisted applicants in order to strengthen the external perspective and ensure additional objectivity.

Based on the information collected (e.g. professional suitability, suitability within the research field, teaching competence) about the applicants, the appointment committee draws up an appointment list.

After the final appointment list has been approved by the extended Faculty Council, the first detailed, formal review of the procedure is carried out by the Department for Structural Development Planning and Appointment Matters (IX D). In the list discussion, the President approves the appointment list for decision by the Academic Senate, which then decides. The second file review is carried out by the Senate Chancellery.

Experience has shown that both review steps take some time.

Once the university's internal committees have approved the appointment list, it is sent to the senator with a request for appointment.

Please note that it may take some time before the appointment is finalised.

From placing the call to accepting the call

After the senator has granted the appointment, the appointment negotiations will begin as soon as you have declared your basic willingness to accept the appointment to the President of Humboldt-Universit?t.

Acceptance of the appointment in principle may be subject to the positive outcome of the negotiations.

Humboldt-Universit?t always endeavours to maintain a culture of open communication with applicants during the appointment negotiations. In order to achieve the best possible outcome for both sides, comprehensive preparation is particularly important.

Making an appointment

We will arrange an appointment with you for the subsequent appeal hearing in order to bring together all those responsible. The hearing usually takes place around 6 weeks after the call is issued.

Required documents

The person responsible for you will need the following documents for preparation:

  • The concept paper on research and teaching contains information on the organisation of the content as well as the personnel, material and spatial resources of the professorship. Please also list all other points that are to be negotiated and will facilitate your positive decision-making process. By being as specific as possible, you will help us to familiarise ourselves with your needs and requirements. The concept paper should be agreed with the host institution.
  • Please let us know your salary expectations with the salary letter . Please also send us the last salary statement available to you from your current full-time employment.

Further clarification required

If there are any queries regarding specific points in your concept paper or similar, the person responsible will contact you directly. They will of course be available to answer any questions or problems you may have regarding the procedure.

If you still have any questions, please let us know in advance. This will allow all parties involved to prepare and, if necessary, present proposals for solutions at the hearing date.

It is particularly important to our university to conduct appointment negotiations with applicants constructively, fairly and swiftly in a pleasant negotiating atmosphere.

During the negotiations, the representatives of the Presidential Board will go through all the key points of your concept paper with you and clarify any questions.

You will only conduct confidential negotiations about your personal remuneration with members of the Executive Committee. Personnel and material resources will also be negotiated with members of the Dean's Office.

You will then receive two separate offers based on the commitments made during the negotiation meeting:

  • The outcome of the negotiations on the personnel, material, spatial or other organisation of your professorship will be set out in writing in the offer of equipment.
  • The outcome of the negotiations on your personal remuneration will result in a written salary offer. It contains the exact numerical breakdown of the promised remuneration (basic salary and performance-related pay).

As a rule, you will have six weeks to decide whether to accept the position under the conditions offered. If desired, these documents will be sent to you in advance by e-mail.

We hope that the acceptances you have received will help you to make a positive decision and that you will decide in favour of a career at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin.
