Teaching commitment

In addition to research, university lecturers are obliged to devote part of their work to teaching. Regulations on this are set out in the current version of the ordinance on teaching duties at universities.

Scope of teaching duties

The scope of teaching duties is expressed in teaching hours (LVS). One LVS is at least 45 minutes of teaching time per week of the lecture period of the semester.

At universities, the standard teaching obligation is

  • for professors teaching academic subjects is 9 LVS,
  • junior professors in the first three years of service 4 LVS thereafter 6 LVS,
  • Honorary professors at least 2 LVS,
  • associate professors at least 1 LVS and
  • private lecturers 2 LVS.

Deviating teaching obligations

The teaching obligations of professors can be determined in deviation from the above-mentioned standard teaching obligations. This is based on an average teaching obligation of 9 teaching hours for professors in a faculty. The deviating teaching commitment must be determined in such a way that the standard teaching commitment of the professors is maintained over a period of three academic years.

Employment at non-university research institutions

For professors who are employed at non-university research institutions as part of a cooperation, different regulations apply with regard to the scope of teaching. This is set out separately in a cooperation agreement between Humboldt-Universit?t and the non-university research institution. The minimum teaching obligation is the title teaching of 2 LVS.

Perception of certain functions

For the fulfilment of certain functions at the university, the teaching obligation can be reduced upon application or by general regulation. This includes, for example, the function of dean or managing director of central institutes (up to 50 per cent) or dean of studies (up to 25 per cent).

Taking on tasks in public

If teaching staff perform duties in the public interest outside the university which preclude the exercise of teaching duties in whole or in part, Humboldt-Universit?t may, with the consent of the responsible senate administration, reduce the teaching obligation for the duration of the performance of these duties or exempt them from the teaching obligation.
