Climate and environment

The consequences of climate change are among the greatest challenges facing our society. How can the findings from research and science be used to shape the climate and environment in a sustainable way? We present our projects, initiatives and institutions on this topic.

In focus: Sustainable agriculture

The growing world population and the consequences of the climate crisis are jeopardising future food supplies. Innovative ideas and sustainable agricultural systems are needed to organise the production and supply of food sustainably and efficiently. Scientists at Humboldt-Universit?t are researching these topics in projects and think tanks.

How can sustainable transformation succeed?

IRI THESys researches how humans and the environment influence each other - with a view to topics such as climate change, food, water and resources. The research focus is on sustainable transformations. Knowledge transfer is particularly important to the institute: the results of its research are disseminated to society - for example through events, educational projects or cooperation with schools.

Sustainable materials research

With the founding of the Center for the Science of Materials Berlin (CSMB), Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin is profiling and consolidating the research focus on materials science in a centre. It contributes to findings in energy supply, sustainable resource utilisation and the development of technological foundations. The focus is on the discovery and research of new materials. The aim is to understand their functions and uncover their hidden potential in order to turn visions and concepts into tangible reality.

Water in climate change

Life is impossible without drinking water. At the same time, water can become a threat - for example through flooding or droughts that jeopardise harvests. Water is also politically contested in Germany, as the debate surrounding the Tesla factory in Grünheide shows. The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is focussing on water-related risks of climate change, for example in the Einstein Research Unit "Climate and Water under Change" (CliWaC).
