Research for a sustainable habitat
Safe access to healthy and sustainable food for a growing world population, the protection of biodiversity and dealing with social inequality and vulnerable food systems are key issues for the future. Scientists at the Faculty of Life Sciences are developing interdisciplinary strategies to find answers to these challenges and shape our living environment in a sustainable way.
Sustainable land use, environmental and urban development
The Institute for Agricultural and Urban Ecological Projects at Humboldt-Universit?t (IASP) conducts research focussing on nutrition, the circular economy, animal welfare and urban ecology. The institute acts as a practice-orientated and creative source of ideas, translating scientific findings into applicable technologies. As a non-profit, "external industrial research organisation", the IASP supports small and medium-sized companies in particular that do not have their own research capacities.
The future of food, agriculture and forestry
Agora Agrar is an independent think tank that promotes a fact-based and solution-orientated discussion on the future of food, agriculture and forestry. The interdisciplinary team develops studies, dialogue formats and practical concepts that contribute to the implementation of climate and sustainability goals. Thematically, the work ranges from the further development of arable farming and animal husbandry to the wet utilisation of moors and land use in the bioeconomy through to issues of sustainable nutrition.
Sustainable agricultural systems
Global population growth, the effects of climate change and the densification of urban areas are challenges for ensuring a healthy food supply. CUBES Circle is therefore pursuing the vision of urban or peri-urban food production in closed, scalable, networked and standardised production modules, known as CUBES. The first prototype for such a production facility is located on the Dahlem campus.
