Good academic practice

At Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, researchers work lege artis, i.e. "according to the rules of the art". In this way, they ensure the high quality, credibility and integrity of their research results. Good academic practice is central to this. We support researchers with guidelines and further training.

Statutes on good academic practice

With the Statutes for Safeguarding Good Academic Practice of 2023, the HU implements the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG), which it formulated in 2019. The Statutes set standards in the research process and define the procedure in the event of suspected academic misconduct.

Research ethics

Researchers should also reflect on the possible consequences of their research. Increasingly, specialist journals, funding organisations and ethics guidelines are demanding the submission of ethics opinions from ethics committees. At Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, researchers can contact the ethics committees of their faculties and other institutions.

Use of artificial intelligence

The use of artificial intelligence also raises questions for good academic practice. Recommendations offer guidance. These include, among others:

  • HU guidelines on the use of AI
  • AI in teaching
  • AI tools of the HU
  • Recommendations for the use of individual tools

Further training

Humboldt-Universit?t offers extensive continuing education programmes on good academic practice for various areas and target groups as well as references to external offers. These include, among others

  • Introductions to database research
  • Workshops on reference management programmes
  • Training courses on research data management and data publication
  • Qualification opportunities for all career levels (R1-R4)

Support with legal issues

Data management and data protection

Certain legal conditions must be clarified in advance, especially if research data is to be published. However, the mere processing of data can also be subject to legal restrictions. It should therefore be checked in advance which of the following legal areas may need to be taken into account.

The reporting office aims to prevent or uncover illegal activities such as financial crime, corruption and environmental offences (from Humboldt-Intern, 01/2024).
