Course structure and content
The Bachelor's programme in Italian aims to impart specialized knowledge of the Italian language and culture, as well as to provide a solid foundation in Italian language skills. The focus is on the content and methods of linguistics and literary studies, taking into account cultural and media studies perspectives and theories. During their studies, students develop the ability to analyze phenomena of the Italian language from synchronic and diachronic perspectives and to interpret literary texts within their historical and theoretical contexts. Furthermore, students acquire the skills to independently apply their knowledge to new questions and topics.
We strongly recommend studying a semester abroad. Students may conclude ‘learning agreements’ for this purpose.

Special features
We expect students on this course to have Italian language skills. If students do not possess these, they may complete a preparatory tutorial programme. You will find detailed information online on the Department of Romance Literatures and Linguistics website.
Knowledge of a modern foreign language or Latin is also desirable, and adequate German skills are required.
The subject Italian Studies belongs to the field of Foreign Languages. Romance Studies examines the Romance languages, literatures and cultures. The subject in question uses example-based teaching methods. It also requires students to look beyond the language being studied to other Romance areas and their languages. The acquisition of foreign language skills is therefore not the focus of the course. If you only wish to learn or perfect the Romance languages, a course on a Romance subject will not meet your objectives.
