Course structure and content
You will become acquainted with the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as their neighbors. You will examine the material traces – such as cities, buildings, and everyday objects – and explore what they reveal about life in antiquity. The influence of these cultures in later periods will also be considered.
You will acquire foundational knowledge in all key areas of the discipline, practice using various methods, and develop your own research questions. This includes critically evaluating theories, developing your own arguments, and presenting and discussing your work in groups.
The programme also sharpens your understanding of cultural contexts, your ability to handle complex information, and your capacity to find structured solutions – skills that are valuable far beyond archaeology.
During your studies, you will participate in field trips, write essays, and engage with innovative approaches such as 3D models and virtual reality applications. In this way, the programme combines academic foundations with practical experience and opens up diverse career development opportunities.

The Winckelmann Institute at the HU offers its students a diverse range of courses, which is intended to meet both the spectrum of the subject and the career prospects of the graduates.
The subject can be realised with different focuses and talents – as a science of archaeological excavation and documentation, of cultural-historical interpretation and reconstruction, as well as of public presentation and discussion.
The aim of the programme is thus to test one's own interests, to deepen one's skills and to develop new competencies under the supervision of the lecturers. Accordingly, the Winckelmann Institute realises its archaeological teaching on a broad spectrum, which combines both scientific and practical approaches. Students can also collaborate on current research projects, participate in field campaigns, write scientific texts, realise exhibitions, or create 3D models/Virtual Reality applications.
In this way, we open a wide range of perspectives and opportunities for all our students to apply what they have learned at the HU in their future careers.
If you enjoy exploring foreign, past cultures and their material heritage, and have an interest in the history of ancient Greece and Rome, this degree program is a good fit for you.
If you look forward to encountering archaeological excavation sites and ancient objects, and are curious about the critical analysis and creative discussion of scientific observations and methods, that's also an excellent prerequisite.
The program combines intensive reading and engagement with archaeological findings with practical work. This includes participation in excursions, research projects, and field campaigns in the Mediterranean region.
Those who combine scientific rigor with motivation and a spirit of inquiry will find an exciting study environment in Classical Archaeology.
