Handout for students and teachers

Guidelines for implementing the modules of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) and the Student Research Opportunities Programme at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin.

BUA teaching formats at the Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin

This handout explains the implementation of the modules of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) and the Student Research Opportunities Programmex (StuROPx) at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin in the summer semester 2025. An overview of the teaching formats initiated by the BUA can be found on the Berlin University Alliance website.

Which modules are suitable?

BUA modules and Profile CertificatesBUA modules are proposed by the responsible teaching staff from the Humboldt-Universit?t's range of courses. The modules must be assigned to one of the following subject packages:

  • Gender & Diversity
  • Society & Philosophy
  • Digitalisation
  • Environmental and climate protection
  • Global Health

In addition, BUA modules can be assigned to a "thematically free package", provided that at least one of the criteria agreed for BUA teaching formats is fulfilled:

  1. The content focus of the BUA teaching programme is on social challenges of global significance.
  2. Research-based teaching and learning processes or the transfer of cutting-edge research into teaching is ensured.
  3. The BUA programme has an international orientation.
  4. The BUA programme is interdisciplinary.

Student Research Opportunities Programmex (StuROPx)

StuROPx is a teaching research project of the BUA. A team from the BUA coordinates the advertising and allocation of teaching assignments. The BUA office supports the teaching staff in entering the course in the course catalogue and in managing participants in AGNES. It is available to the faculties for questions regarding course registration (see 5.). Registration for courses in StuROPx and registration of BUA students correspond to the processes described under 3. and 4.

Registration for BUA courses

Before the BUA course is published in the course catalogue, the BUA office determines with the course management whether online registration will be activated for students and whether the number of places is limited. If there is no online registration, the BUA office will manually register the HU students for the course in AGNES on the advice of the course management.

  1. BUA students of the network partners must contact the teaching staff to apply for participation in the course. There is no formal privilege for BUA students compared to regular part-time students.
  2. The BUA office recommends, taking into account the objectives of the BUA, that those responsible for teaching in BUA teaching formats consider requests from students of the network partners favourably.
  3. BUA students should send the completed "Application for participation in BUA modules", a current certificate of enrolment and the confirmation of participation from the lecturer to the BUA office by email.

BUA courses in the course catalogue

The BUA courses are entered in the course catalogue of Humboldt-Universit?t. They are entered by the BUA office in the interdisciplinary compulsory elective area in the "Berlin University Alliance" path. The BUA office will enter the details on the course page in the course catalogue in consultation with the course director. All BUA courses contain further information on registration for students and contact details for the BUA office in the "Remarks" field.

Registration of BUA students

After receipt of the application for participation in BUA modules or StuROPx, the BUA office registers the students of the network partners as BUA students at the HU. BUA students can be identified by a matriculation number, as they begin with a 3. After registration, they receive a PIN letter and can log in to AGNES and have certificates issued there, for example. The status expires automatically at the end of the semester applied for. BUA student status is linked to enrolment in BUA courses. For courses that are not explicitly labelled as BUA courses, the regulations for regular part-time students apply.

Benefit certificate and crediting

After registration as a BUA student at HU, the BUA office adds the external participants to the course in AGNES. BUA students can apply for recognition of achievements at their university by submitting a module description, a certificate of successful participation in the course and, if applicable, the curriculum. A template for the certificate of successful participation will be provided to students by the BUA office. The BUA Office for Studies and Teaching will answer any queries.

In order to ensure credit transfer for the degree programme, the modules should generally comprise at least 5 CP. In individual cases, individual courses may be combined to form a BUA module. There must either be a module description in the subject-specific study and examination regulations or a module description must be developed. The BUA Office for Study and Teaching can assist you with this.

We recommend naming modules that have a scope of at least 5 CP and are described within the interdisciplinary compulsory elective area of the subject-specific study and examination regulations. The BUA Office for Studies and Teaching will support you in coordinating with lecturers who have also planned courses in the interdisciplinary compulsory elective area (?WP) module.

Students can, on their own initiative, combine various BUA modules in a subject area to create a package comprising between 15 and 30 ECTS and, once they have successfully completed all the components, can be awarded a BUA Profile Certificate. The Profile Certificate is issued by the BUA Office for Study and Teaching.
