Focal points & goals

The Berlin University Alliance has set itself five goals and three overarching cross-cutting themes in order to develop Berlin into an integrated research centre and a leading science location in Europe.

With the proposal "Crossing Boundaries towards an Integrated Research Environment" as a basis, the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has been funded by the federal and state governments as part of the Excellence Strategy since 2019. In the first funding period of the Excellence Alliance, the four partners are working on utilising synergies, pooling strengths and establishing new structures in order to further strengthen the individual partners and the development of their institutional profiles. Since 2020, the cooperation has been administratively supported by the Berlin University Alliance cooperation platform, which was established by law of the State of Berlin as a public corporation. The BUA has begun an intensive strategy process for the upcoming evaluation in 2025 and with a view to the planned continuation of funding from autumn 2026.

With the founding of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), the Excellence Alliance has set itself the goal of creating an integrated research area in Berlin. We want to become the centrepiece of an excellent Berlin ecosystem that includes universities, research institutions, museums, cultural and political institutions as well as start-ups and industry partners.
