Description

This focal topic complements research by the DeZIM institute departments Consensus and Conflict and Migration by examining an interdisciplinary research perspective on the influence of geographical and social spaces on processes of integration and inclusion as well as the separation, marginalization or exclusion of migrant groups. Spaces are understood as empirically determinable central units in which migration and thus the processes mentioned take place and through which these processes are influenced at the same time, i.e. local contexts that are shaped by migration as well as the integration options and the negotiation of migration shape and affiliation (Glasze & Pott, 2014). The focus is on socio-geographically determinable spaces, i.e. places such as city districts, neighborhoods, public spaces, etc., in both rural and urban contexts, in which interaction and communication between groups and especially with immigrants and in which social processes of negotiation of migration take place. Virtual rooms are also considered, but only in reference to the non-virtual rooms examined in the project.
