Description
Opportunities to participate in education have been increasing for 50 years. On the one hand. On the other hand, there are still major inequalities in who benefits from this and in what way. In particular, children and young people from educationally disadvantaged homes, from migrant families, and those with disabilities and/or special educational needs are often not sufficiently involved. This contradiction in the democratic promise of justice weakens trust in educational institutions.
The new Collaborative Research Center [in:just] 1750 at Goethe University will investigate the causes and background of this continuing inequality. The consortium will receive a total of €14 million for the next three years and nine months. Thirty-one researchers from disciplines as diverse as education, sociology, philosophy, political science, law, human geography, and computer science form an interdisciplinary consortium led by the Department of Education. Prof. Merle Hummrich and Prof. Vera Moser, both of whom work in the Department of Education at Goethe University, will serve as spokespersons. Merle Hummrich focuses on youth and school, while Vera Moser, as the Kathrin and Stefan Quandt Endowed Chair, is primarily dedicated to inclusion research.
Institutionalized participation processes for children, adolescents, and young adults in the education system will be examined from various perspectives. Topics include teaching in a multilingual context or in cases of presumed ¡°behavioral disorders¡± on the part of students, but also the procedure for taking children and young people into care, as well as unaccompanied minor refugees, the effects of gentrification on the quality of regional educational opportunities, the power of guardians to object, and computer-assisted decision-making processes, which will be examined comparatively in the education and legal systems. The research program also includes international comparative research on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, children's rights, and intersectional differentiation processes.
SFB 1750 [in:just] is the first special research area funded by the DFG that focuses primarily on educational science. ¡°In view of the considerable social crises and challenges we face, we are very grateful for this great opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary and cooperative research on the upbringing of children and young people,¡± says Prof. Merle Hummrich. ¡°It is particularly important to me to investigate how human rights standards affect the everyday lives of young people,¡± emphasizes inclusion expert Prof. Vera Moser.
