Course structure and content

The Bachelor's programme in Biology aims to impart the necessary knowledge of the discipline's research areas, topics, principles, theories, and methods, taking into account the demands of the professional world. This equips students for scientific work, scientifically sound judgment, critical reflection on scientific findings, and responsible action. This applies both to qualifying students for Master's programmes and to preparing them for careers in relevant professional fields.

Students acquire this competence through a combination of classroom instruction, online learning, and independent study, both individually and in groups. Studying Biology at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin also allows for early participation in research projects

The programme promotes internationalization through opportunities for study abroad. Furthermore, interdisciplinary skills are developed. These enable students to establish cross-disciplinary connections and acquire key qualifications such as language skills, intercultural competence, social skills, gender competence, methodological skills, and information and media literacy.

Special features

The Bachelor's programme in Biology offers a broad foundation in organismic biology (botany, zoology), physiology, microbiology, molecular cell biology, and ecology. In addition, students acquire the necessary knowledge in mathematics and the natural sciences of chemistry and physics to understand modern biological questions.

A special feature is the close connection with the Biophysics programme and the provision of basic knowledge in immunology.

Furthermore, students can choose courses in parasitology, developmental biology, and theoretical biology during the advanced phase of their studies.

Participation in a current research project is also an integral part of the programme. The degree thus provides optimal preparation for the consecutive Master's programmes offered at the institute, which specialize in organismic or molecular biology.

The Biology teacher training programme requires both an interest in science and a commitment to education

It is helpful to enjoy experimenting, observing, and analyzing, to be interested in ecological and molecular biology contexts, and to be willing to critically reflect on your own teaching ideas.
