Karsten Asshauer is a media computer scientist (system administration, web development) and IT project coordinator in the field of humanities informatics (Digital Humanities) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Since October 2025 he has served as the IT Officer of the Zentrum für Kulturtechnik (ZfK; formerly HZK). Since October 2019 he has been responsible at the ZfK for the IT systems (client/server operations), web platforms and websites of the ZfK, its units and projects, as well as IT support for staff and exhibition venues (including the Humboldt Lab, Tieranatomical Theatre, Object Lab, Kleine Humboldt Galerie, Campuskunst). His remit includes server and web operations, web programming, IT onboarding/offboarding, hardware/software procurement and lifecycle management, training/support, and event technology. He is currently coordinating the migration of the ZfK web presence as a pilot into the new HU web landscape (TYPO3) in cooperation with Department VIII (Communications & Marketing) and the CMS (editorial and technical).
From 2014 to 2019, at the Computer and Media Service (CMS), he led the “HU-Box” cloud storage project, worked in the backup/file service (TSM), and coordinated the university’s IT liaison officers.
From 2001 to 2013 he worked at the Institute of Art and Visual History in administration, development, and coordination/communication within digital humanities projects (including Requiem, Census, Bildakt und Verkörperung, Digital Peirce Archive, imagelab, imeji).
Since 2016 he has been deputy chair of the General Staff Council (GPR) and head of the “IT & Data Protection” working group. He supports IT co-determination procedures under the University’s IT Framework Works Agreement (IT-RDV) and the PersVG Berlin and contributes to the drafting and negotiation of works agreements.
