On 22 and 23 November 2025, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin's Hochschulsport, together with the German Chess Federation and the Berlin Chess Association, will once again be hosting the German University Chess Championships.

It is an exciting individual tournament with over 300 participants from around 80 German universities. Students and employees of German universities are allowed to take part. This makes the event a nationwide meeting place for chess enthusiasts. The tournament takes place in the Mensa Nord cafeteria at Hannoversche Stra?e 7.

This year's tournament is also the largest university chess tournament in the world – outside the United States. A rapid chess tournament will be played on 22 November and a blitz chess tournament on 23 November.

Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin will once again be represented by several players this year. The HU team will be led by PD Dr Michail Chatzidakis. He is an associate professor at the Department of Art and Visual History and is also the university's highest-rated player. Last year, he already achieved a respectable 12th place in a strong field of participants, closely followed by HU student Raphael Kracht in 13th place.

All games will be broadcast live and commented on the German Chess Federation's Twitch channel. It's worth tuning in and keeping your fingers crossed for the Humboldtians. In addition to fame, honour and prize money, they can also win qualification for the 2026 World University Games Chess in China.
