When formulas become art

The "Mathemenschen" exhibition breaks with the cliché of dry maths. 14 researchers build bridges to society with their works of art and show in an audio guide how much culture and origin characterise their thinking.

Maths is often seen as dry, abstract and inaccessible, a discipline in which there seems to be nothing new to discover. However, this supposed distance between science and society is not a law of nature, but a cultural misunderstanding. The "Maths People" exhibition aims to bridge precisely this gap. 14 scientists from all over the world show that the first step towards the public must come from the mathematical community itself.

In the exhibited works, mathematical research merges with artistic expression. But the show goes beyond pure aesthetics: it poses the profound question of how much maths is shaped by our cultural context. Is maths done differently in Pakistan than in Germany? Or is it the same logic that is merely interpreted differently?

To explore these questions, the exhibition opens up a personal space. An accompanying audio guide gives the 14 artists themselves a chance to speak, providing insights into their careers and their paths to maths. Each work is complemented by informative posters that shed light on the scientific background and show where mathematics is reflected in the cultural forms of expression in their respective home countries.
