Prof Dr Tilman Brück has been elected to the Steering Committee of the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The United Nations panel deals with the evaluation of scientific findings in connection with global food security and nutrition. It is led by a steering committee consisting of 15 world-renowned scientists. Brück's appointment recognises his significant contribution to food security and the second Sustainable Development Goal "Zero Hunger" (SDG2).
"It is a great honour for me to join the HLPE-FSN Steering Committee," said Prof. Dr. Tilman Brück. "I look forward to contributing to making food systems more resilient in times of existential crises for low-income consumers and smallholder farmers around the world, thus contributing to food security for all."
Brück has been Heisenberg Professor of Economic Development and Food Security at the Thaer-Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU) since 2022 and is head of the "Economic Development and Food Security" research group at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) in Gro?beeren. He also heads the Zero Hunger Lab, a joint institution of the HU and the IGZ.
Around 800 million people worldwide suffer from malnutrition - almost 50 million people are acutely affected by famine, for example in Yemen, South Sudan and Gaza. 60 per cent of malnutrition and 80 per cent of famine worldwide is caused by war and violence. Against this background, Tilman Brück uses microeconomic analyses to examine how crises in Africa, the Middle East and Asia affect people's lives, their income and their nutrition and food security in the long term. His aim is to develop new political instruments, particularly for humanitarian emergency aid and development aid. The aim is to end hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, as too many people around the world are still starving or suffering from malnutrition.
Brück regularly advises national governments, the European Commission, international organisations, the United Nations, the World Bank and non-governmental organisations on issues relating to food security, development, crises and conflicts.
