Berlin universities break new ground in teacher training

Berlin plans to introduce a Flex Master's degree programme for teachers in the winter semester 2026/27

In Berlin, a Flex-Master will be introduced in the teacher training programme in the winter semester 2026/27. The Flex-Master will better link the employment of student teachers at schools, which runs parallel to their studies, with the skills acquired during their studies and thus takes into account the increasing number of student teachers who are already working at schools during their studies. With the innovative Flex-Master programme, Berlin is setting an example for forward-looking, practice- and science-oriented teacher training that supports the acquisition of skills by students and at the same time meets their needs as well as the challenges posed by the shortage of teaching staff.

"Modern teacher training relies on flexible study structures that combine different educational pathways with an academic foundation and practical experience. The practical semester creates space for reflection on pedagogical action and the application of theoretical knowledge - accompanied by the university and school mentors. It is exemplary for a teacher training programme that focuses on quality, diversity and connectivity," says Prof. Dr Niels Pinkwart, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin.

The introduction of the Flex-Masters programme was a joint effort by Freie Universit?t Berlin, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, Technische Universit?t Berlin, Berlin University of the Arts and the Senate administrations responsible for higher education and education.
