HU sociologist awarded Germany's most important prize for young researchers on 3 June.

Dr. Christine Hentschel from the Department of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin has been awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Preis 2013. The urban and regional sociologist is one of nine recipients selected from 123 candidates by the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The prizes, each worth 20,000 euros, will be awarded on 3 June 2013 in Berlin.

Christine Hentschel has been working at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin since 2011. As a postdoctoral fellow, she leads a group of young researchers supported by the Einstein Foundation Berlin on the topic of material, social and political infrastructures of the urban. Her research interests lie in the fields of urban sociology and anthropology, governmentality studies and spatial theory. Following her doctoral thesis on security policies in Durban, South Africa (2010), she began her research on current processes of change in Berlin-Neuk?lln, endeavouring to make innovative approaches from urban research in the global South fruitful for understanding "our" cities as well.

About the prize

The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Preis has been awarded annually since 1977 by the German Research Foundation and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research to young scientists from all disciplines. It is intended to recognise and encourage the recipients in equal measure and to encourage them to continue their scientific careers in a straightforward manner.
