Berlin Science Prize goes to HU linguist Artemis Alexiadou

With this prize, the state of Berlin honours her achievements in research into human language comprehension.

Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Artemis Alexiadou, Professor of General Linguistics at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU) and Director of the Leibniz Centre for General Linguistics in Berlin, will receive the Berliner Wissenschaftspreis 2023. The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, will present the award tonight in the Festsaal of Rotes Rathaus.

With the prize, the Berlin Senate is recognising the linguist's decisive contribution to human language understanding and her international influence on the development of research. "Her research is of particular benefit to a city like Berlin, which is characterised by bi- and multilingualism, especially in a school context."

"I feel deeply honoured. This is a wonderful recognition of the work I have done together with my team and partners at Humboldt-Universit?t and the Leibniz Centre for General Linguistics," says Artemis Alexiadou. "And the prize is a great honour for linguistic research in Berlin."

About the award winner

Artemis Alexiadou is Director of the Leibniz Centre for General Linguistics and Professor of General Linguistics at the Department of German Studies and Linguistics at the HU. She researches the theory of syntax and morphology, cross-linguistic variation and heritage languages. In 2014, she received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the DFG. In 2016, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim. She is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, among others.

The Berliner Wissenschaftspreis

The Berliner Wissenschaftspreis is awarded for outstanding achievements in science and research. In addition to scientific excellence, the ability to put the research into practice is also a decisive criterion. The prize is endowed with 40,000 euros.
