Project description

Obesity is a chronic condition associated with a wide range of physical, psychological, and social limitations. It often affects individuals’ daily functioning and significantly reduces their ability to participate in working life. To support people with obesity, the Hohenelse Rehabilitation Clinic of the German Pension Insurance Berlin-Brandenburg offers “AdiFit”, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment and aftercare programme. It combines medical care, physical activity, nutrition counselling, and psychological support. Although AdiFit has been successfully implemented in clinical practice, a scientific evaluation of its effectiveness and long-term impact is still lacking.

The aim of this research project is to systematically evaluate the AdiFit programme. The study investigates how medical, psychosocial, and functional health indicators change during rehabilitation and throughout the twelve months following the intervention. Key outcomes include body weight, metabolic markers, mental well-being, quality of life, motivation, physical activity, and perceived work ability. Work-related aspects—such as return-to-work expectations and subjective employability—are also assessed, as obesity frequently affects participation in working life.

The study uses a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Approximately 100 participants will be assessed at six time points, from the start of rehabilitation to one year post-discharge. Data collection includes medical examinations, validated questionnaires, activity trackers, and interviews. Activity trackers accompany participants throughout the entire study period, providing objective information on movement and activity behaviour. Interviews with participants and clinical staff provide additional insights into factors that facilitate or hinder successful implementation of the programme.

The evaluation will determine how effective AdiFit is in improving weight, lifestyle behaviours, psychological health, and work ability, and how sustainable these changes are over time. Moreover, the study will identify key success factors and practical challenges, helping to refine the programme and inform the development of standardised obesity rehabilitation services across Germany. Overall, the project contributes to improving the care and long-term rehabilitation outcomes of people living with obesity, strengthening their participation in daily and working life.
