Tonality 1900-1950: Concept and Practice
Facts
Description
Tonality for a long time seemed obsolete in relation to 20th-century music -- a category tainted by notions of backwardness or even of the reactionary. Recent decades have seen a shift in outlook, though, among contemporary composers, musicologists and theorists, and a new openness towards the phenomenon of tonality. The international conference Tonality 1900-1950: Concept and Practice / Tonalit?t 1900-1950: Konzept und Praxis will contribute to this discussion by reflecting on the compositional practice of tonality in the first half of the 20th century; and by situating tonality within its broader cultural-historical milieu. The conference will explore a range of conceptual positions in both music theory and music journalism.
