Description

The research project sets out to examine Scandinavian literatures since 1800 with the aim of analysing certain functions of literary texts as to how cultural otherness is being described and disseminated. To what extent have literary texts been contributing to the emergence of collective self-perceptions in the Scandinavian countries, from their constitution as nations to post-modern times? Different modes of alterity (ethnicity, class, gender, nature, time, culture, religion etc.) and their mutual relationships will be studied. Literature of alterity is a joint project of the Department of Northern European Studies at Humboldt-Universit?t and the Institute for Comparative Germanic Philologies and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Freiburg, with participation of ELTE University in Budapest.
