Project description
The project “Fairwork” deals with platform work. While platform work continues to spread in the global economy, several digital labour platforms have found a growth-enhancing environment in Germany. Estimates of the number of platform workers in Germany vary between 500,000 and 1.6 million workers. Platform workers, many of them migrants, often receive low wages, suffer from poor working conditions, have limited voice and enjoy limited labour and social rights – leading to major social cohesion challenges. It is therefore of utmost importance to ensure fair working conditions for workers in the platform economy. The Fairwork Project assesses the working conditions offered by digital platforms against a set of “fair work principles”. The project collects data for action-oriented research and organises a summer school.
