Project description
Apollonia, founded as a colony of Corinth and Kerkyras on the Strait of Otranto, had been in place since the end of the 6th century BC at the latest. BC over a series of larger temples adorned with marble sculptures. This presumably also included the Shtyllas Temple, which is the focus of the present project. It had been erected very prominently above the port of Apollonia in an extra-urban sanctuary.
The project combines three project parts, some of which are interlinked:
The only remaining temple column is currently in danger of collapsing. As the only upright Doric architecture in the eastern Adriatic and in Albania, it is a prominent building, which is also widely known in the country today. However, the Albanian monument authorities have so far not been able to devote themselves to its sustainable protection on their own. In a first, independent part of the project ("restoration"), various security and restoration measures are to be carried out.
