Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Juliane Kokott: "Der EuGH als Motor der Integration"

Humboldt speech on Europe by the Advocate General at the European Court of Justice

"Even the best goals do not allow us to shift the boundary between law and politics."

It was a pleasure to welcome Prof Dr Dres. h.c. Juliane Kokott on 28 November 2024 for a Humboldt speech in the Senate Hall of Humboldt-Universit?t. She spoke on the topic of "The ECJ as the engine of integration".
In addition to presenting ECJ case law on the rule of law in the Member States and its effects, Advocate General Kokott also explored the question of the revolutionary nature of this very case law. This was followed by reflections on whether the role of supreme courts should lie in the application and interpretation of law or rather in the organisation of societies. Advocate General Kokott argued in favour of a more conservative role for the highest courts.
