The September excursion, accompanied by Indonesian language lecturer Esie Hanstein, included discussions on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the idea of a ‘Green Campus’ at universities in Jakarta, Semarang and Yogyakarta. Culture and social issues were not neglected either, as visits were also made to artists, museums, temple complexes and an orphanage. Through direct contact with students, teachers and actors from the arts, culture and civil society, the theoretical examination of sustainability, globalisation and cultural diversity was expanded to include practical experiences. At the same time, observations of real-life situations, social organisation and ecological challenges led to a more nuanced perception of larger contexts. Despite the exertion of the trip, the realisation remains that intercultural academic excursions make an invaluable contribution to the development of global skills.
