Description

This project, the first ever sustained study of Greek slavery and social
mobility, aims to fill a gap in the scholarship concerning the likelihood
and scale of the phenomenon, as well as the factors that facilitated the
social promotion and demotion of slaves. Such factors can be divided into
institutional ones (i.e., the economy, military, public service), as well
as personal ones (such as merit, advantage maximization, instrumental
rationality, and even luck), both of which will be under discussion in
this project.
