Development of an organic grape assortment for the Brandenburg wine region with climate-adapted dry, frost and fungus-resistant grape varieties with testing of historical vines occurring in Brandenburg

The ongoing shifts in climate are significantly altering the vegetation cycle in viticulture. This means that not only early grape varieties, but also those that ripen in the medium and late stages, are reaching physiological maturity. It's worth noting, however, that despite these changes, the continental climate still holds sway in the federal state of Brandenburg. Furthermore, the future management of water resources in the area is poised to become a limiting factor. These developments directly influence the criteria for grapevine selection in viticulture. In this project, the focus is on analysing modern PIWI vines for their drought and frost tolerance, while historical Vitis vinifera varieties are to be tested for their resistance to fungal diseases. In this way, both traditional and innovative approaches to viticulture can be integrated. These studies are crucial to ensure the long-term success of viticulture in the region and at the same time to meet the challenges of climate change.
